The AJFHL (Alberta Junior Female Hockey League) was started in 2009 and 7 teams joined the league, Sherwood Park Steele (founder), Irma Chargers, Fort Sask Fury, Spruce Grove, Wainwright, Edmonton Wolves, and Central Alberta Amazons. The following year (2nd year) we lost Wainwright and added three teams from the south; Lethbridge Eagles, Calgary Titans, and Cochrane Hurricanes.
We have evolved over the years and have gone up to 10 teams, we have settled in with 9 teams currently and have a north and a south division. We have 4 teams in the north: Sherwood Park Steele, Irma Chargers, Fort Sask Fury and Edmonton Wolves. There are 5 teams in the south; Central Amazons (Red Deer), Lethbridge Eagles, Calgary Titans, Cochrane Chaos and Calgary Jags. We have a 28 game regular season schedule with a home and away game vs the opposite division. This league is set up for graduating midget AAA, elite, A, ACAC, and CIS girls that wish to continue to play competitive hockey and still allow for a somewhat balanced life with full-time post-secondary students and full-time jobs.
We have kept Junior Female Hockey alive in the west with the support of Winnipeg where they have the only other Junior League out west. They have had their league for 2 years longer and only 7 teams. We continue to work together and pressure the other two western provinces in putting together a Junior Female League. BC is currently talking about starting a couple of teams.
