The Alberta Junior Female Hockey League is thrilled to announce that Angela "Angie" Mason, a professional female ice hockey player, will be one of the head coaches for the Fort Saskatchewan Fury this season!
You might be wondering—wasn't she playing professional hockey in Europe? You’re correct! More recently, Angie has ‘unofficially’ retired from playing professional hockey. She spent two years in the Swiss hockey league, including one year in Davos, a town best known for hosting the Spengler Cup—a hockey tournament with over 100 years of history. Davos is a major hockey hub, and when they decided to lead the way with women’s professional ice hockey, Angie knew she was going to be part of something historic. With shared resources from the men’s hockey league, strong fan support, and fantastic infrastructure, Angie and her team felt not only well-supported but also like they were paving the way in women’s ice hockey history.
But this announcement is extra special because it’s a homecoming for Angie. She once played for the AJFHL with the Fort Saskatchewan Fury, where her journey in competitive hockey truly began. Now, returning as a head coach, she brings her incredible experience full circle.
You might recall a feature we did on Angie back in 2022. She shared that after a grueling pandemic and time away from hockey to focus on her engineering degree and master’s studies in various Canadian locations, she was eager to return to competitive hockey. And thankfully, a lot has changed for women in the sport!
Ten years ago, Angie found herself disappointed by the limited options for women’s professional ice hockey. However, after her time and exploration abroad, she now feels differently, having experienced professional hockey in Europe—something she hopes to share with future female hockey players!
Her fondest memory and biggest highlight of her professional career was playing in the first-ever women’s game at the Spengler Cup. The game was highly marketed, supported by fans, and set a Swiss attendance record—sure to be a game that will set the tone for women’s professional ice hockey everywhere.
After two years of playing professionally, Angie contemplated continuing for one more year, but her heart was elsewhere. As an Edmonton local, she is excited to return to her roots, reconnect with friends and family, and celebrate some personal milestones, like getting married!
Angie’s experience is unparalleled. She has so much to share, and we as a league are incredibly fortunate to have her. We are confident she will pass on her talent, expertise, and knowledge to future professional female ice hockey players.
Welcome home, Angie! We’re thrilled to have you back in the AJFHL and back with the Fury!
