For Calgary Titans Assistant Coach Brynn Ferguson, hockey is about confidence, connection, and the joy that comes from giving your all both for yourself and your teammates.
Her coaching philosophy is simple but powerful:
“Look good, feel good, play good. Same team, same dream.”That mantra reflects Ferguson’s belief that confidence and camaraderie are inseparable parts of success. When players feel good about themselves and the team around them, they bring out the best in each other both on and off the ice.
Leading Through Positivity and ProgressFerguson’s motivation as a coach comes from watching her players grow — not just in skill, but in spirit.
“Seeing the progress of the team and watching the girls come together in tough games or situations is what drives me,” she explains.
Having had coaches who made a lasting impact on her growing up, Ferguson strives to do the same.
“I’ve always wanted to be a positive influence for athletes — to be the kind of coach who helps them believe in themselves.”A Young Team with Big EnergyThis season, the Calgary Titans are powered by a blend of youthful enthusiasm and veteran poise — a dynamic that’s shaping a strong team culture.
“Our team this year is quite young, and that’s brought a new level of dedication and attitude,” says Ferguson.
“There’s a contagious, playful energy that balances so well with the experience of our returning players. Together, they’ve created a consistent and hardworking group.”That chemistry between new faces eager to prove themselves and seasoned players leading by example is what makes the Titans’ locker room so special.
Building Confidence Through CommunicationWhen it comes to building confidence and unity, Ferguson focuses on one thing above all: communication.
“We win and lose as a team,” she says.
“It’s important to communicate openly with individuals and with the whole group — to make sure everyone feels seen, supported, and part of something bigger.”It’s that open-door approach that helps the Titans stay connected and accountable, even when the competition heats up.
A League Built on Love for the GameFerguson’s favourite part about coaching in the AJFHL is the passion that fuels every team and every player.
“There’s still so much love and drive to play good, competitive hockey,” she says.
“It’s the perfect balance — for players heading to college, coming out of university, or just not ready to hang up the skates yet. There’s a space for everyone here, and everyone plays hard while having fun.”That inclusivity and the relentless love for the game is what makes the AJFHL such a meaningful part of women’s hockey in Alberta.
Defining Success Beyond the ScoreboardFor Ferguson, success isn’t just measured in wins or goals, but in growth.
“It’s about the progress we make as a team and the individual wins along the way,” she explains.
“If the girls are working together, playing hard, and supporting each other — that’s a huge success, no matter what the scoreboard says.”Her advice to young female hockey players echoes that same spirit:
“Never stop playing. Now is the time to work hard and put yourself out there to get where you want to be. Female hockey is growing bigger than ever — even if it feels like a shot in the dark, take the chance. You never know what could come out of it.”Under Ferguson’s guidance, the Calgary Titans embody that belief, a team built on drive, dedication, and the joy of playing the game they love.
